Historic Blakeley State Park

Come along with us as we venture deep into the delta to discover more about these remarkable, yet somber events and their enduring significance.

What You'll Do

Remote Bayou Canot, located just off the Mobile River north of the city, was the scene of two of the most dramatic tragedies in regional history: the derailment of Amtrak’s “Sunset Limited” in 1993 and the last documented importation of African slaves into the United States in 1860 aboard the Clotilda.

Insider Tips

The boat is covered, has bench seating, and a restroom facility.

Arrive at park at least 30 minutes prior to boarding to allow for travel time and to check in and board.

"A great trip!"

We all enjoyed this river cruise. There were seven in my group, which also included sudents from Spain and Thailand. The captain was very informative and had a great sense of humor. We will be back in November for another adventure.

The captain was experienced and well informed. The Delta is a beautiful expanse of nature, largely unspoiled. And I am sure there is so much more that we didn’t see. The captain provided some interesting facts about the area. He could have provided a little more detail about the Clotida and its recent discovery, its descendants and plans to raise the wreckage and make a museum in Africatown. It would have been nice for the boat to have water for the guests. It was a pretty warm day. Mark from Three Rivers and the raptor demonstration was excellent. Good interaction with the kids. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable experience!

"Great cruise with friendly and knowledgeable crew."

We loved our tour. It was very informative as well as pleasurable. I learned a number of interesting details. When booking the trip I didn't realize that we would also tour the Alabama State Docks area and circle around to view the USS Alabama. We were able to pull close to the beautiful lotus that were in bloom. We viewed a variety of wildlife including turtles, an alligator, egrets, herons, seagulls, osprey and maybe an eagle. One osprey had just caught a fish and was taking it back to its nest. So the tour exceeded my expectations. We will certainly book another tour in the future!

Great ride. I was a little sad due to the trip being centered around the anniversary of such a tramatic part of the Tensaw recent history.

Really hit home for me. I lost my Uncle in this tragedy, who was one of the engineers. I’ve only seen the area in videos and news articles, but today I was finally able to see in person where it took place. The Captain and tour guide did a fantastic in detailing the incident accounts throughout the tour. Thank you!

We took the boat today to visit the site of Amtrak’s Sunset Limited derailment 25 years ago. My dad was one of the engineers that was killed. Everyone at Blakeley made it so special for us. We appreciate the stories and the photos they shared. We’ll definitely be back! Thank you for making this possible!
